Liu An Gua Pian, Melon Slice green tea, from Liu An, Anhui, China.
This tea resembles the seeds of the melon and the name literally means 'melon slice'. The fresh tea leaves that are picked to produce this "Melon Slice" consist of a bud with two or three leaves, then the mature leaves are separated from the tender leaves. Then both the leaf tip and stem are cut off from the mature leaves. So each individual leaf of this "melon slice" has no bud or stem.
Carefully, the leaves are then slowly heated in a pan over a charcoal fire, often giving a delicate hint of smokiness. Liu An Gua Pian Melon Slice green tea has a curled leaf edge and a rich green color with white frost on the leaf surface. The smell is fresh and the taste is soft, sweet and refreshing. This tea ranks 7th on the list of the 10 most famous Chinese teas and its origins date back to the Tang dynasty (about 1300 years ago: The T'ang dynasty was a dynasty in China from 618 to 908 AD). The original production took place in Gua Pian, located on the Qi Tou Shan (mountain) which is located in the Jin Zhai province. At present, Liu An in Anhui has developed as the largest production area, while the best Gua Pian is still from Jin Zhai County.
Our Liu An Gua Pian is of excellent quality. Long and narrow emerald green colored tea leaves about 2 centimeters long. The floral taste and aftertaste of a strong cup of Gua Pian is reminiscent of Tie Guan Yin Oolong tea. The pleasant sweetness of this tea gradually fills your mouth, which is experienced as very refreshing.
